Mulder Design Reveals The 70-Metre Project Opal Concept

A Superyacht Inspired By High-End Caribbean Villa Living

Dutch studio Mulder Design has officially released new details regarding Project Opal, a 70-metre superyacht concept that seeks to redefine the onboard experience through the lens of land-based luxury. First introduced to the industry in 2024, the design philosophy centers on the atmosphere of Caribbean villa living, aiming to dissolve the traditional boundaries between the vessel and its maritime environment. The concept utilizes a proven high-speed hull platform, which the studio suggests can increase speed by up to 30 percent depending on the chosen propulsion package, marrying performance with a distinctively relaxed aesthetic.

The interior spaces have been curated to evoke the tactile warmth of a summer residence. Project Opal features a palette heavily reliant on weathered teak and leather wood to establish a nautical foundation, while rough stone elements add a coastal texture. To further the authentic villa sensation, the designers have selected natural linen upholstery throughout the guest areas. This material selection is intended to create an environment where every moment feels like a gentle escape to a private hideaway that happens to be floating at sea, balancing practical marine design with poetic inspiration.

Innovation is evident in the vessel’s layout and atmospheric controls. The main deck lounge includes an automatic wooden pergola system paired with a kinetic light installation, designed to cast patterns reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a terrace roof. This space also hosts a bar crafted from rough stone and worked wood, leading to a long teak walkway that separates two distinct lounge areas characterized by custom wave-pattern carpeting and low-profile seating. These elements work together to ensure the flow of movement on board mimics the easy transitions found in open-plan coastal architecture.

Externally, Project Opal is defined by calm, organic lines that Mulder Design describes as appearing sculpted by the wind. The profile avoids aggressive modernity in favor of timeless elegance, featuring flared bulwarks on the upper two decks that not only enhance the exterior styling but also improve visibility from the owner’s private forward deck. The current configuration places six guest cabins forward on the main deck, moving crew quarters to the lower deck, while the upper deck houses a guest skylounge that can be reconfigured into a dedicated owner’s deck if desired. A stern beach club with a large transformer platform and a transverse garage completes the package, offering direct connection to the water.
