Build New
Commissioning a custom yacht is a significant investment, often a result of years—or even generations—of wealth and vision. While the journey requires thoughtful planning and detailed agreements, your experienced broker will guide you seamlessly through every phase, ensuring your vision comes to reality.
Planning
01.
Planning is a vital component of the yacht-building journey, helping to prevent unforeseen expenses and delays. Throughout the development stage, and before finalizing the Yacht Building Agreement (YBA), the project director works closely with the client’s team to clearly define all requirements, establish practical budgets, and set achievable timelines.
Engineering
02.
The majority of custom yacht engineering takes place before the Yacht Building Agreement (YBA) is signed, a stage known as pre-engineering. This phase is essential to ensure the technical and legal viability of the project before finalizing the design. During pre-engineering, design concepts are transformed into detailed workshop drawings and essential construction documentation. While the design phase may span up to nine months, the engineering process can take an additional 20 to 26 months. To enhance efficiency, these phases are often conducted in parallel. Once both engineering and design are complete, Yachting Select’s team begins sourcing and ordering all materials necessary for construction.
Hull & Superstructure
03.
Building a hull is much like putting together a massive 3D puzzle. Large plates are cut into precise shapes, assembled into sections, and welded together to form the hull. For a 90-meter yacht, this process takes 12 to 16 months with 250 to 300 workers, requiring up to 1,500 tonnes of steel for larger yachts.
Simultaneously, the superstructure—often made from aluminum—is constructed in parallel. It typically takes up to 12 months. Once both are complete, the hull and superstructure are fused over 12 to 16 weeks, after installing major systems like engines and air conditioning within the hull.
Outfitting
04.
Once the yacht is moved to the outfitting facility, machinery, pipe systems, and cable trays are installed, followed by cleaning and painting the bare metal. Exterior outfitting includes fairing and painting, installing railings, glass, teak decking, and larger features like pools and bars. Interior outfitting involves adding insulation, wall panels, luxury joinery, and furniture. After outfitting is completed, the yacht is launched and prepped for its final stages before delivery.
Commissioning
05.
The commissioning process is critical to ensuring the yacht is fully operational. During this phase, all systems and components—from engines and navigation systems to electrical and plumbing—are meticulously designed, installed, and tested to ensure they meet strict operational requirements. This includes verifying that each element functions as intended, complies with safety standards, and is integrated seamlessly with the overall design. Once the testing is complete, the yacht is fine-tuned to ensure optimal performance, making it ready for use and delivering the luxurious experience expected by its future owner.
Sea Trials & Delivery
06.
Sea trials are a crucial step in the new build process. During this phase, the builder’s team, designers, naval architects, and other technical experts join the completed yacht in open waters to evaluate its performance. This trial ensures the yacht meets all specifications set out in the Yacht Building Agreement (YBA) and satisfies the owner’s team, including the captain, build engineer, and surveyors. Once the yacht’s performance is approved by everyone involved, the final payment is made, and the yacht is officially delivered to its owner.
Warranty & Support
07.
Custom-built yachts are sophisticated vessels, and fine-tuning their performance can be a detailed process. The warranty period ensures your captain and crew have the time to detect and resolve any variances so your yacht meets the expectations set in the Yacht Building Agreement (YBA).
At Yachting Select, our support doesn’t end at delivery. Backed by proven expertise, we guide you through refits and complete maintenance solutions, keeping your yacht in flawless condition, always.
