Lürssen’s 110-Metre Ice-Class Explorer Sighted Underway
The veil of secrecy surrounding one of Lürssen’s most guarded projects has finally lifted as the 110-metre superyacht, now officially identified as O3, departed the German shipyard for her maiden sea trials in the North Sea. Previously known as Project Shackleton and Project Icecap, the vessel’s emergence marks a significant milestone in a build process that has spanned nearly eight years and involved a high-profile ownership change.
Yacht spotters along the Kiel Canal captured the first clear views of her finished profile, confirming a substantial departure from her initial renderings. The distinct axe-bow—a hallmark of her original naval architecture by Salt Ship Design—remains, but the superstructure has been comprehensively restyled. Following her sale in 2022, the acclaimed Espen Øino was brought in to refine the exterior lines, resulting in a more utilitarian yet sophisticated aesthetic that blends the ruggedness of a commercial explorer with the polish of a private superyacht.
The sea trials are currently focused on testing the vessel’s complex propulsion and navigation systems. O3 is powered by a state-of-the-art diesel-electric hybrid system, utilizing three Wärtsilä 9L20 engines designed to optimize efficiency and minimize vibration during long-range polar expeditions. Her ice-classed steel hull is engineered for high-latitude cruising, a capability that aligns with the growing demand for vessels that can operate autonomously in extreme environments.
Observers noted the addition of a prominent aft helideck, a modification reportedly added during her extension and refit phase in Hamburg. This feature, along with significant cargo-carrying capacity and a versatile tender garage, underscores her primary purpose as a globetrotting platform for adventure.
As O3 undergoes these critical maneuverability tests, the industry awaits her final delivery, projected for later in 2026. The interior, penned by the Paris-based CG Design, remains completely private, though it is known to accommodate up to 20 guests across ten staterooms. Once delivered, O3 will rank among the world’s largest and most capable expedition yachts, offering a volume of approximately 6,300 gross tonnes.
Her completion signifies not just another launch for Lürssen, but the realization of a highly bespoke vision that successfully bridges the gap between commercial-grade engineering and luxury yachting.
